Program Name: Jumpstart Rutgers University Newark
Collaborative Partners : Youth Initiatives
DESCRIPTION: Jumpstart is a national early education organization that recruits, trains, and assigns college students to provide educational support for preschool children in low income neighborhoods to achieve the goal of ensuring that every child in America enters kindergarten prepared to succeed. They meet twice per week at their assigned preschool sites in the Greater Newark area, primarily the Fairmount Promise Neighborhood District, to assist the children in language and literacy development-the core content focus of Jumpstart’s proven curriculum. They follow a structured preschool lesson plan designed to help children develop academically, physically, socially, and emotionally. RU-N Jumpstart students gain direct hands on experience and training in child development, early education and learning, community service, and leadership skills, while simultaneously preparing Newark preschool students to benefit from a high quality, enhanced supplemental educational program to help with their academic growth, development, and success.
